Internet Cafes

I went around a few internet cafes here in Philippines and there are a few trends or questions that pop up in my head.

Why aren't there a lot of PCs with Firefox installed? Don't these people know that it is a technically a more superior browser than IE?

No Open Office? It is a free alternative to Microsoft Office. And are you telling me that Internet Cafes are able to buy Microsoft Office for all their PCs?

And why not Linux?

I would think that the Philippine govt. would start a push to use open-soource software. Look at all the millions of dollars flowing out of the RP into the coffers of Bill Gates; $100 a pop for each computer for Windows, and they even have BIR enforcing it. I think that Brazil has made open source a priority.

Well I've seen cafes that have Open Office and have it disguised as The Microsoft Office suite like renaming Open Office Writer to "Word"

Although I agree on the Firefox bit.

Familiarty with the said software is one thing... especially when it comes to people who are visually inclinded. Changing views of a software environment that they have been used lead to them to be lost in that said environment.

I agree in using open source softwares and but more there must also be proper education and training for most users. I guess the fault is in the teaching technique when teaching basic computer software. We would like to have everything to be hands on right away befor even studying the basic principles and laws behind it. Just like in driving schools in our country.

I really prefer using open source softwares... support from forums will come much faster rather from proprietory products.
